Resilience and Legacy:
The Story of Money Bayou Café and Cottages

Our family has always been deeply connected to the history of resilience and community-building, rooted in the legacy of those who came before us. One such significant part of this story is Money Bayou Café and Cottages, a historic beach resort in Apalachicola, Florida, that became a beacon of hope and a gathering place for African-Americans during a time when opportunities were limited. In 1951, Damon Peters and Raymond Driesbach, two prominent African-American businessmen from Port St. Joe, recognized the potential of this land and, along with other local investors, transformed it into a space where Black families could enjoy the beach freely. Money Bayou became more than just a business—it was a sanctuary where cultural exchange, entrepreneurship, and community gatherings thrived. Our family has deep ties to this story, with ancestors like Nathan Peters actively involved in creating opportunities that challenged segregation and built stronger communities. Mary Peters, a steadfast matriarch of our family, played an instrumental role in preserving the spirit of Money Bayou, ensuring that its legacy continued to inspire future generations.

This resort was more than just a destination—it became a symbol of resistance and resilience. During a time when Black families were often excluded from public beaches and social spaces, Money Bayou offered a place where African-Americans could come together, relax, and celebrate. The café, cottages, and dancehall provided not only a retreat from the struggles of daily life but also a platform for cultural expression, fostering pride and connection within the community. The legacy of Money Bayou continues to resonate with our family history, as it reflects the determination and vision of those who fought for access, equality, and a better future. Mary’s efforts in championing these values have left an indelible mark on our family's commitment to creating safe spaces and opportunities in the face of adversity, shaping the path for future generations to carry on the spirit of community and resilience.
